Shatpath Brahmin is the Brahmin text of Yajurveda. Maharshi Dayanand Saraswati has called Brahmin texts as lecture-texts of the Vedas. Maharshi in his Vedbhashya has indicated many Shatpath Brahmins that this mantra is explained in Shatpath. From the very beginning of the Shatapatha Brahmana, it appears that it is a text of lectures on Yajna. In the Indian tradition, Yajna is ubiquitous in various forms. Whether it is daily work or routine or work, the method and use of different yagyas are found everywhere. Viniyog of Veda mantras is full in these Yagyas. Therefore, Shatpath Brahmin can also be called Veda-discourse book and Yagya-discourse book.

शतपथ ब्राह्मण यजुर्वेद का ब्राह्मण ग्रन्थ है। ब्राह्मण ग्रन्थों को महर्षि दयानन्द सरस्वती ने वेद के व्याख्यान-ग्रन्थ कहा है। महर्षि ने अपने वेदभाष्य में बहुत्र शतपथ ब्राह्मण का संकेत दिया है कि यह मन्त्र शतपथ में व्याख्यात है । शतपथ ब्राह्मण के आरम्भ से ही यह प्रतीत होने लगता है कि यह यज्ञ का व्याख्यान ग्रन्थ है। भारतीय परंपरा में यज्ञ विभिन्न रूपों में सर्वत्र व्याप्त है। चाहे नित्य कर्म हों या नैमित्तिक या काम्य, सर्वत्र विभिन्न यज्ञों का विधान व प्रयोग मिलता है। इन यज्ञों में वेद मन्त्रों का विनियोग भरा पड़ा है । अतः शतपथ ब्राह्मण को वेद-व्याख्यान ग्रन्थ व यज्ञ-व्याख्यान ग्रन्थ भी कहा जा सकता है।
